By around 2 years old, many children are using at least 50 words and beginning to combine words into short phrases, such as “Daddy home”, “more banana” or “baby sleep”.
Children don’t all reach milestones on the same timetable, so we think in ranges rather than strict targets.
What counts as a word?
A word doesn’t have to be pronounced perfectly to count. If your child uses the same word or word approximation consistently with the same meaning, it can still be counted as a word.
For bilingual children, words in all languages count.
But rather than focusing only on a number, notice whether communication is progressing over time. New words, new combinations, more frequent use. Progress over time often tells us more than a single number.
Milestones are useful guides. They’re not a diagnosis and they’re only one part of the picture.
