Understanding language and using language are closely related. But they don’t always develop at the same pace. Some children understand much more than they can say, while others may find both areas harder.
Two important areas we look at are receptive language, how your child understands language, and expressive language, how they share their thoughts, needs and ideas. This can include words, gestures, signs or other ways of communicating.
Although these areas influence one another, they don’t always develop together. A child may understand well, while needing more support to express themselves.
Looking at both areas gives a clearer picture of communication than words alone.
A child may understand language well while still needing support to express themselves. Expressive language plays an important role in everyday life. It’s how children ask for help, share ideas, join conversations and build friendships.
If you’re not sure where your child fits in, asking questions can give clarity.
